Seit 2013 verteilt Jason Shelowitz aka Jay Shells seine Arbeiten im öffentlichen Raum. Er druckt Rap Zitate auf Strassenschilder, die er an den Orten aufhängt, die in den Texten erwähnt werden. In New York hat er angefangen, es ging weiter in Los Angeles, Philadelphia und Houston. Ich verfolge das Projekt von Beginn an und bin sehr begeistert darüber, dass aus dem Langzeitprojekt nun ein Buch wird.
The Rap Quotes Coast to Coast entstand in Zusammenarbeit mit Fotograf Aymann Ismail und wird als Hardcover bei Barnes & Noble erscheinen. Der Bildband ist bereits für knapp 20$ vorbestellbar, der Versand aus den USA wird’s deutlich teurer machen.
Part art book and part guide book, „The Rap Quotes Coast to Coast“ takes you on a new kind of journey, with gorgeous photography by Aymann Ismail to offer context for the hip hop lyrics that mark locations in these major cities.
Each city/chapter opens with remarks by local hip hop journalists and ends with a map plotting every site-specific rap lyric for that city, giving the reader the ability to take their own hip hop-specific tour of the city they love.
The Rap Quotes campaign is ongoing, and in the next few years will launch in Chicago, New Orleans, Miami and other cities around the globe.
