Vor 18 Jahren trat Justin Timberlake bei mir auf den Plan. Seine Karriere mit N’sync habe ich höchstens am Rande verfolgt, ein Solo-Album von ihm stand nicht (überhaupt gar nicht) auf meinem musikalischen Wunschzettel. Dann kam Like I Love You mit Clipse als Feature, produziert von den Neptunes und von da an wurde rasiert. Ein Hit nach dem anderen wurde ausgekoppelt und das komplette Album konnte den – plötzlich hohen – Erwartungen allerseits gerecht werden. Justified ist eines der komplettesten, rundesten und nachhaltig wichtigsten Alben der letzten 20 Jahre, würde ich sagen.

Diese Doku begleitet Justin Timberlake ins Studio während der Aufnahmen mit den Neptuns, die neben Timbaland die meisten Songs produziert haben. Sehr interessant den Legenden über die Schulter zu schauen.

There’s nearly 15 hours of „making of“ footage shot during the Justified studio sessions. I wanted to trim that down to a shorter, more accessible doc piece with some score and voiceover added. It’s such a treat to spend time with these guys and watch them work. I would honestly love to turn this concept into a feature documentary with voiceovers from Timberlake, Pharrell, and Trace (something akin to the “Amy” documentary but specifically about the making of Justified).
