Der BB-8 Droide hat schon in seinem, nur wenige Sekunden dauernden, Auftritt im Trailer zu „The Force Awakens“ Herzen gebrochen. Später wurde bekannt gegeben, dass die niedliche Knutschkugel kein CGI ist, sondern ein echtes, funktionsfähiges Requisit.

Hersteller des BB-8 ist eine Firma namens Sphero, die nun aus dem Modell des Films auch eine Spielzeug-Version gebaut haben. Das Resultat sieht extrem vielversprechend aus. Gesteuert wird per iPhone App und es sogar ein Projektor an Bord, der vom Handy gefilmtes wiedergeben kann.
